White Rock’s Community Hub Plans Shift After Public Feedback
In a powerful display of community voice, White Rock city council has pivoted its plans for the proposed “Uptown Community Hub.” The original idea — a 12-storey mixed-use hub at 1510 Johnston Road — has been put aside after overwhelming public feedback favored keeping the new civic facilities at the current City Hall site on Buena Vista Avenue.
Mayor Megan Knight emphasized that the strong response from residents was exactly what council was hoping for. Through surveys, open houses, and petitions, over 82% of respondents voiced their preference for the existing City Hall location, compared to just 13% who supported the Uptown option.
On July 21, 2025, council voted unanimously to shift the focus to the current civic block. This hub will modernize White Rock’s public services — including the library, daycare, seniors’ and youth facilities — while respecting the heritage and character that residents value.
Knight praised the process, noting that the consultation gave residents a chance to shape the future of their community: “What do you want? We’ve heard you,” she said.
The next steps will involve planning, funding, and designing the hub at City Hall, with a new Community Hub Steering Committee being formed this fall to guide the process. Councillors Elaine Cheung and Bill Lawrence added that this outcome highlights how public input can drive meaningful change.
For White Rock residents, the hub will mark a blend of modern services and thoughtful development — with the community’s voice at its heart.
